19/03/2009 - ROAD CLOSURES

THIS NEEDS THE RETAILERS ATTENTION!!!!!

The local Town Council have proposed a series of road closures throughout the year. There are plans for some major road closures over numerous weekends and several midweek events. Whilst the general idea was to bring people in to Earl Shilton there has been no consultation whatsoever either with the Forum, individual retailers or business's. I would ask all members and concerned parties how they feel about having no vehicle access to your premises on these dates?

The first weekend closure at the end of June is for a funfair, it may bring people and children in but not "shoppers" which is what we need. Actual "real shoppers" could well be discouraged from coming in to the Town Centre due to access difficulty. These continuous planned closures could well lead to people avoiding Earl Shilton Town Centre altogether and have a disastrous effect on the business's that have so far managed to survive.

Some of the ideas, like a Farmers market would be seen as a positive as they would hopefully bring "shoppers" in to the Town. I do feel however that it is imperative, particularly post bypass that the road is not closed off completely at any time and that any planned events are based around keeping the road fully open at all times.

Surely the common sense approach would to be to wait for a period to see just how the bypass effects the Town Centre, consult with the retailers who are to be most effected and use that input do decide on the best ways to attract shoppers in to Earl Shilton.

These views are obviously personal and I would appreciate views from other Forum members.

Full details of the proposed closures can be found in the attached file Click here
or obtained from the Town Council office.
